Whisperwood Cottage and Junkologie

On a quick junking trip to MN last year, we (the JunkFest girls) had the privilege of meeting Amy, of Whisperwood Cottage and Junkologie. This wasn't just a first time introduction for us. In person it was...but Amy had introduced herself to us earlier in the year. Through blogging we had found a connection, a common love of junk, and a friendship. Meeting her in person was just the icing on the cake. She was everything we imagined, and more. Her sweet smiling personality that shines out from her blogs was even brighter in person. Her photography had a way of speaking before her words were even read.

From left to right in the picture: JunkGirl(Andrea), Amy, Cassie, SweetMelissa(Missy).

Then even more to our surprise, we were asked to be in a contest... ALONGSIDE the talented Amy!! What an honor! To our dismay, and shock!, Amy was eliminated this week by an extremely narrow margin in the votes.

We'd like to give a shout out to Amy. Her blogs are fabulous and once you visit you will surely want to go back!! So check her out at Whisperwood Cottage and Junkologie. Here are a few pictures of her most recent contest entry, which you can see more of at SYTYCD.

Do You Remember this Cool Junky Lamp?

This is a post my dear Junk Sista Cassie did a while back. It is such a jaw dropping recycle/repurpose/ trash to treasure...I just HAD to bring it back and show it off!

Just wanted to share with you a lamp I constructed for my 10 year old daughter's room. I was at an auction sale a while back, where an acquaintance won the bid for a box of interesting items, one of which I had my eye on. When I asked if he could part with this particular piece, he generously gave it to me. (Thanks Justin...if you're reading this!) I knew immediately what I wanted to use it for. I'm guessing it was part of some farm machinery, perhaps an auger cover of some sort.

Because I cannot remember to take "before" pics, you'll just have to envision it a slightly rusted silver color. I spray painted it black. I also found a (new) curvy metal plant hanger that got a fresh coat of black paint as well.

I had previously purchased a hanging lamp kit from Lowe's, so I just had to notch out about an inch of metal on one end of the auger where the light kit clipped perfectly into. (gotta love those dremels!) I found velum paper at a craft store, as well as some star shaped crystals....love the pattern in the paper! I used fishing line to tie the crystals to the bottom end of the auger. With Gorilla super glue, I glued the velum to the inside of the auger, securing it with clothespins until dry.
I still need to make a cord cover with some black fabric or something that coordinates in her nuclear green room, but I love how it turned out...and so does she!

Have you placed your votes over at SYTYCD yet? Time is running out...this weeks polls close Friday evening! Results will be posted Saturday, and then on Sunday week 3 will begin again with a new theme. Don't miss it...this contest is FULL of inspiration!

Inspired Living...It's More Than a Feeling

Week two of SYTYCD is up and running. Nine decorators left...who will YOU vote for? This week's theme is "Catalog Inspired".

What inspires you?

To join in on the fun, and check out the competition, head on over to "So You Think You Can Decorate" and see for yourself the awesome talent involved in the contest.

Comfortable, casual living...often inspired by mail order catalogs, is more than a feeling...it's a state of mind. Does your living room invite you to sit back, relax, maybe settle in with a good read? Are you surrounded by colors and textures that are pleasing to the eye, harmonious with your lifestyle? Here at JunkFest, it's about surrounding yourself with treasures you love, with an unexpected twist!

With just one living area in our home (many have both formal and informal living rooms) I wanted the furniture to be comfortable, inviting guests to sit back, kick up their feet and stay awhile. I like to incorporate some of my junk-style infused pieces for fun and interest, such as the small side table made from a rusty grate and a cream separator base. The rusted wall shelf, which holds portraits and empty frames was crafted from vintage tin crown moulding.

Unexpected textures such as rustic crates or primitive wood bowls, well-used in another era, evoke a casual feel.

Time-worn clock faces embellish these baskets, and help to anchor in the darker accessories in the room.

The vintage typewriter holds memories of ancestors and a simpler time. Architechtural elements and a perfectly patina'd wash stand-turned-table add character.

Catalogs, such as Sundance, Pottery Barn, or Ballards are now offering vintage replicated pieces at a premium....but comfortable, casual living doesn't have to cost much.

Has inspiration found you? Remember to vote for your favorite projects at SYTYCD.

(JunkFest is #5 on the vote box)

More than a Feeling. It's a State of Mind.

There's even junk in Mexico

Something on the horizon caught my eye while I was walking on the beach in Mexico recently...It actually stopped me right in my tracks...No, you are not seeing things...there it was...a single doll leg standing upright to the heavens in the middle of the beach...all by itself.Instantly I thought it would make a great holder for my margarita on the rocks! Well, or at least a fun picture to share with you all, my fellow bloggers and junk sisters.

Yes, folks...totally serious. Not a found doll head, (which some junk lovers are crazy about decorating with - why, I have NO idea), but a LEG.
Let's face the facts: A junk girl can be resourceful anywhere, anytime. (Let's just hope some poor tourist didn't lose their lower extremity prosthetic...)!
So, what's the most "interesting" junk object you've found and what did you do with it?! Do tell.
