I love you Pinterest.

Pinterest

Who's up for another before & after?  The inspiration for my dresser face lift came from Pinterest (who else?) only I didn't follow the link all the way back for the how-to. I figured the visual alone was all I needed. Alas, I was visually mislead.  The pin I saw for this dresser had a caption with it that read "lace front drawers" or something like that.
Cool idea, right?  I thought so too.  I had just the dresser in mind and set out to transform her.

Don't let the dust and filthy antlers scare you.  The dresser has been sitting in storage for a bit, although there has been a time or two when my house has been less than spotless (wink wink).  The antlers also underwent a transformation and now reside in some lucky gal's home...possibly holding jewelry.  Yay for dead deer!  Anyway.....the dresser.  So I knew I wanted to try ASCP in Coco, which was similar to the Pinterest dresser.

After two coats had dried, I measured the drawer fronts to determine where I wanted to place the trim pieces.  Here's a hint for you....the big box home stores do not carry wood trim petite enough for some of the smaller dresser drawers out there.  I ordered mine online from a doll house hobby site.  I have since seen tiny decorative trims at JoAnn fabrics?  Who knew?  You do now.

After measuring the trim and attaching it to each drawer with wood glue and brads, I measured the lace and glued it inside the trimmed area with a layer of Mod Podge. Another hint: Very flat, petite (word of the day) fine lace can be hard to find.  I found this in the bridal section at JoAnn's, right after discovering that wee dollhouse trim!
Bridal lace is ridiculously expensive. Just sayin.

It was about at this point during the project that I decided to follow the link on Pinterest for this dresser.  Good idea. But kind of late.  The original poster used textured paintable wallpaper, not lace.  Of course she did!  Whatever. Too late now.
Besides, I think that over-priced lace is pretty.

After coating the dried lace with 2 coats of the Coco chalk paint, I painted the trim pieces with ASCP in Old White. I think it sets the drawers off nicely.

Then came the clear wax to seal the deal, along with some previously loved vintage glass knobs.  Icing on the (bridal?) cake!  Here she is below at her JunkFest debut.

Pretty darn similar to the Pinterest dresser, wouldn't you say?

And for the record, the Pinterest dresser does look like lace, yes?  I may have been visually duped, but I'm not bitter.  I still love you Pinterest!

R U Green with Envy?

One thing I can tell you about JunkFest...there's something for everyone! Each of us 4 JunkFest Girls have different tastes and with that comes a variety of repurposed creations and merchandise like you've never seen. In the last post, Andrea shared a bit of the funky rusty touch with you. Love it! And here, I want to share with you a bit of vintage primitive. I recently picked up this wonderful handmade tool trug from some friends that have a keen eye for vintage, antique, and the unique, and quite frankly...they have a great eye for superb JUNK.

The craftsmanship is like you seldom see on modern products. Reinforced with metal corners and bound by leather straps, you'll rarely see such a sweet find in original form. (take note, I haven't washed it yet!)

I love it just the way it is. You'll find this tool trug at JunkFest In Carrington, ND, September 11, 2010. You never know...it may look just like this...or it may be different.

What would you do with this trug? paint it? plant flowers in it? display it in your house?

tell me! tell me!

Getting the most out of life...with junk

Linked to Donna over at Funky Junk Interiors:Saturday Night Special - CENTERPIECES!

It's time to relieve Cassie who has been fantastic about keeping up this blog the past month! Sweet Melissa, Lynette and myself had graduates, State competitions to attend and that end-of-senior year activity. It was a crazy-busy May and June. So, THANK YOU to our junk sister, Cassie, for changing up the blog and keeping it "fresh" this past month!
With that said, while shopping in Fargo for graduation decor, I couldn't resist taking five minutes
for myself to run into one of my favorite junk stores...I found this neat rusty metal tray-looking thing. I think it used to be an old sign.
Perfect rust. Perfect old book. Perfect starfish from a vacation in Mexico. Perfect white candles. Perfect rusty stars. Perfect touches for a coffee table centerpiece.
Hopefully our newly graduated seniors get the most out of life no matter where their paths may take them!

A Story of Us

This week is our turn for the Contestant Spotlight over at SYTYCD, go ahead and stop over there and take a peek if you wish. If you'd rather stay, we'd love to have you! Here is the story of us, or some of it anyway. We've had such a great time in the world of junk that the story goes on and on! Make sure to click on all the links to see some of our past FUN posts!!

Cassie, Missy, Andrea and Lynette

Living in a small community, everyone just kind of "knows" everyone else, but it wasn't until Cassie and Missy tried the "antique shop" venue while Lynette and Andrea were trying the "flea market" venue that we discovered our common love of junk! We were all having a blast hunting, creating and selling. Who could ask for anything more!?
Then the antique store closed. The flea market was too far away. Hmmm what to do?! That's when the lightbulb went off!! We joined forces, and started an annual JunkFest, bringing a one of a kind sale to our area. It all started in Cassie’s garage. From the moment we made the decision to have an Autumn JunkFest, we started hunting, gathering, repairing, and painting all the junk we could get our hands on. Time was short so we got done what we could, and to our surprise...we managed to fill Cassie's garage and even had overflow. We threw some flyers around, and bit our nails...hoping someone would take note of our little sale. The morning of the event came and we (along with help from some dear family members) scurried to put finishing touches on our arrangements.

Then to our surprise and amazement...could it be??? Dust in the air down the country road? Not one, not two, not even three vehicles heading our way!!! It was a caravan and we couldn’t believe our eyes as a crowd lined up for the opening!

We wanted everything to be fabulous, including the signs leading the way to the sale. Below, you'll see sweet little Sambo. He was so kind to patiently sit and point the way to our first sale. Then tragedy struck. You see, Sambo so kindly offered to point the way to the next year's sale as well. Something must have gone terribly wrong...because Sambo has been missing since that day. Have you seen Sambo? We would really love to have him back safe and sound. Poor little guy.

After the first year we decided we needed a larger venue for our sale. The local fairgrounds seemed to be the logical choice, providing a large building, plenty of parking and bathrooms. We got ourselves and our trusty and faithful helpers matching t-shirts, and went about preparing as we had the year before. Would "they" all come again for our little sale? And sure enough...there was a line at the door! Once again friendship and laughter filled the day, and the readied treasures found new homes.

Another success. Another awesome day. Would we do the sale again? Absolutely! Year three brought with it a few surprise changes. We decided to host our first ever Flea Market in conjunction with our sale. We also allowed a few local youth groups to set up food booths. It was fabulous...junk, music, food, flea and fun! The day was gaining more and more of a festival atmosphere, just as we hoped it would. And again...they were lined up at the gate!

Every year we tried to be creative with our products. Here is a "piano bar" made out of an upright piano!

Years 4 and 5 have come and gone, and yet every sale day feels like the first sale. Butterflies in our stomachs, and we are just giddy about all the fun. The flea market has grown by leaps and bounds. Year 5 we added an admission charge, with those proceeds going to two local charities. And our lovely visitors still line up!!

We've had such a great time hosting JunkFest and the Flea Market...but some of the BEST times we've had are when we go junking together!

We've managed to score some pretty awesome...and some pretty crazy things! Some of our past faves are a 18 drawer galvanized pheasant hatching rack, an upright piano which became a “piano bar”, and one that became a fabulous console table. And dressers that become wine buffets! Look at our past sale posts for more…we love it all! And we often have “seller’s remorse”.

We've got some exciting surprises up our sleeves for JunkFest 2010! So watch our blog for updates. The event will be Saturday September 11, 2010 at the Foster County Fairgrounds in Carrington, ND from 9:00am-3:00pm. Get there early!

Old stuff "spiffed" up for Christmas...

Christmas is almost here folks! Believe it or not, I still DO NOT have my Christmas Tree up yet! Well, I've got some little ones up here and there, but not the big one. It's too big. There, I said it. I'd much rather mess with all my other decorations then that big honkin' thing. Our dining room was looking a little boring (yawn here). Lynette gave me this beautiful star a few years ago and it's one of my favorite things to pull out for Christmas - I love it! I wanted something interesting to hang it on this year...something different. So, to the garage I went. My old metal bed frame didn't sell at Junk Fest. Let me tell ya, I was surprised. It has such a great patina...
Not everyone has an old bed frame in their dining room...too weird? (You can say yes!) I won't be offended cause I think it's just perfect!Okay, the dining room has the footboard so the living room might as well house the headboard! Maybe I have gone off the deep end? Yes?! Care to join me?Now I gotta show you my new wreath! (Last wreath count in my house is like 84!) Ha! I bought it from my friend Beth at Patina White. The girl totally rocks. Her stuff is awesome - check her out!I bought the frame from her - I added all the embellishments to it. Any junker would go CRAZY with this! Let your imagination go wild! I used my circle maker from my scrapbooking stash and cut up a couple old Bingo cards. The old Bingo game had several of the original wooden game pieces. I glued the "I 25" to the card...get it? 25-Christmas Day? (I know you got that!)Then I added some other old stuff I had, some fresh greenery and another 2 and 5...I just can't get those numbers out of my head!
Okay, you're right - enough with the "2's & 5's". I better go now and get my tree up before the 25th is actually here!
