New urn purchase all decked out for summer!

Happy first day of summer! I want to introduce you to my new (old) urn! Let me tell ya, it has been a long awaited purchase. For the past few years I've been looking for one - just the right one - you know what I mean. The ones I've seen have either been waaay too expensive for my pocket book, or just not the right size/shape...or color.
While filling my yearly flower buying addiction at a local greenhouse recently, I turned the corner and saw her - it was love at first sight!She is actually two pieces...two heavy pieces, but the beauty is I can use the top piece in my house this fall/winter - this was the deciding factor without a doubt! I can just picture her filled with Christmas balls and greenery on my dining room table...
Of course her base is wonderful too...sigh.I can't just end there...here are a few pics of some flowers and junk items I decorate with in my yard... don't you just LOVE summer?!
The old scale didn't sell last year at JunkFest - thank goodness! A plant hangs nicely on her.A farmer's seed separator works so well holding up this heavy perennial...
I'm simply in love with my hostas...and ferns...green and lush!

Junker's Challenge...Superbowl style!

We've been busy here at JunkFest implementing some cool, junky ways of serving up game-time treats....just in time for Superbowl Sunday!

Pick your beverage...whether it be soda, domestic or imported beers, or even wine, galvanized is the way to chill! Just add ice...or snow like we do here in the upper mid-west and you're set.

Now that you've got your beverage, grab a plate and let's get started. Below is Andrea's oh-so-perfectly-rusted plate rack, which once housed vinyl record albums. This find was pure junk serendipity!

Add some tarnished silver to the mix, as SweetMelissa did here with her pretzels and we've got another great patina in the starting line-up.

Where to set that pizza? Well, any old cutting board will do, but if you happen to have one of these just laying around...score!

This is a piece I picked up in Oronoco a couple of summers ago. Some clever junker either found or cut a piece of wood to fit perfectly on these old wood-stove legs. After cleaning up that wood and conditioning it with food-grade oil, it's ready to roll. Works great for cheese & crackers too.

Prompt your messy eaters to clean up after themselves with rolled napkins neatly tucked into the base of an old clock.

Who wouldn't want to eat their vegetables when they're stylishly served on an ornate rusty old grate?

No time to roll up those fancy Vanity Fair napkins? No problem! Just set out a roll of paper towels. Mine is resting comfortably on the base of I-don't-know-what, with a vintage curtain rod inserted into it.

Chips 'n salsa....a staple in our house....fits quite nicely on an old bulk scale.

More salt anyone? Don't forget those beverages on ice! You'll need those to wash down the peanuts and pistachios.

Here, I've used an old wooden capital base, inverted and holding a plate of salted-in-the-shells.

Don't forget the potato chips (did I mention salt?) and dip...ala light fixture and mason jar.

And for you sweet tooths out there (you know who you are) this tiered dish of treats needs no further instruction!

A couple cool junk pieces...

I was fortunate to find a couple neat junk pieces a week ago. First up for show is this old rusty scale...I just love it! According to my father-in-law, it was used for weighing grain sacks. It looks pretty neat holding a hanging plant in my front yard.

Okay, I am NOT into old wash tubs, but this is a small one...so petite and perfect for holding a potted plant...I even planted some flowers in the part where the wringer used to be...
And, this could certainly hold drinks and ice at my first back yard party this summer...We junk girls hope you are having a HAPPY and SAFE Memorial Day Weekend!

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY...a junk event?

Since I live with a bunch of males in the house, there's no question Super Bowl Sunday falls under the title of a "holiday" in our home. It's a time for good food, good friends and good drinks. With junking in my blood, my family is used to me incorporating a junk quirk of some kind with any event we host. Whether it's the Christmas buffet dinner spread atop the antique sled on the kitchen island, or the summertime Mexican grilling party featuring a chippy pink door as the table and sombreros filled with chips and salsa, I happily admit: I love to entertain with JUNK!

So, here's a peek at some junk items I'll be using Sunday, but shhhh, don't tell my family, maybe they won't notice! Since I love scales, the large one shown will hold the enchilada casserole, and the small one will hold a family favorite...bacon wraps....yum, yum!

This trio will hold more food...my father-in-law tells me the thing on the left is off a corn planter (it'll hold plates OR dinner rolls on Sunday). Chips and dips will fit nicely on the disc spool/

blade (thanks, dad!), shown on the right, and another hot food item will sit on the hot plate (front). It's actually the base of a lamp and a grate off an old stove...cool, huh?

Normally the corn chopper piece (actually two of them) are the legs that hold an old rabbit cage in our family room. I thought they were perfect! Don't you?

At Christmas the disc spool/blade (shown below) held pretty crystal garland, along with silver and clear Christmas ornaments.... A little shiny plus a little rusty = junk pretty! Isn't your mind just spinning right now thinking of all the neat things you can do with this?! Filled with pumpkins for fall, soaps and towels in a bathroom, and of course, chips and dip! Yes, the possibilities are endless!

And last but not least, this unique plate holder is actually an old album holder for records (remember them?) It sits on my kitchen counter holding my favorite dinnerware. This wonderful find looks exactly how I found it...nice and rusty! The large rusty disc spool will hold all the silverware.

So throw that beer and soda in an old metal tub (filled with SNOW, of course!), sit back and enjoy the junk...oops...I mean the GAME!
